May 15th: National Peace Officer Memorial Day

5/15/2013 In 1962, President Kennedy signed a bill into law declaring May 15th as National Peace Officer Memorial Day to honor those peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.  There is a memorial in Washington D.C. that honors those men and women and contains the names of almost 20,000 officers.  The officers of the Brooklyn Heights Police Department participated in several observances during Police Week including covering our badges with black mourning bands for the week, flying the flag at half-staff and flying the police memorial flag. We also had officers participate in the Greater Cleveland Peace Officers Society parade and ceremony in Cleveland on Friday, May 17th.
